The council was founded in 1989 and is one of the first independent regulatory authorities in Greece. The main responsibilities include granting licenses to private radio and television stations and verifying compliance with the broadcasting legislation. The Council is composed of seven members selected by the Conference of Presidents of Parliament and has  operational independence. The Council is no  controlled by the government, but is subject to parliamentary scrutiny, and decisions are controlled by the courts.
